Instructions

At Dental
Kidz, we want your child to be as
comfortable and as happy as possible when
receiving treatment. After your child’s
initial examination the doctor may recommend
sedation due extent of treatment needed,
young age, situational anxiety or medical
history.
Sedation
dentistry allows comprehensive care to be
provided in a comfortable environment for
patients that might not otherwise be able
to. We have a number of options for our
patients depending on their level of
anxiety, development and medical history.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
is a sweet smelling gas that is used in
patients that are experiencing mild anxiety
regarding dental procedures. It aids in
eliminating anxiety and helps the patient
better tolerate the procedure. It is inhaled
through a mask that we call, “the piggy
nose”. Nitrous oxide is extremely safe and
the most common side effect is nausea and
vomiting.
Diazepam
Diazepam is
often used in conjunction with nitrous
oxide. Diazepam is used to treat mild
anxiety. Depending on your child, we may
prescribe Diazepam and administer to your
child an hour prior to their appointment.

Oral /
Moderate Sedation
Treatment under oral
sedation is recommended for very
apprehensive patients or patients that
cannot cooperate due to medical history.
There are a number of medications that can
be used for oral sedation. Sedatives will be
selected by the doctor based on your child’s
treatment needs. The doctor may choose to
use one of the following agents alone or in
combination with each other: Hydroxyzine,
Meperidine and Midazolam. These medications
are extremely safe and are used routinely in
pediatric dentistry for the purposes of
sedation. Depending on the agent used, your
child may become drowsy within 20-30 minutes
after drinking the medication and may fall
into a light sleep, but will not be
unconscious.

IV / Deep
Sedation
Treatment under intravenous
(IV) sedation is recommended for very
apprehensive patients that cannot be managed
under oral sedation due to inability or
unwillingness to drink oral sedatives or for
patients whose medical history suggests they
would be better managed under IV sedation.
At Dental Kidz, IV anesthesia is
administered by an anesthesiologist. Your
child will fall into a light sleep, but will
not be unconscious.
At Dental Kidz, patient
safety is paramount. For both oral and IV
sedation, we utilize state of the art,
hospital grade monitoring equipment. Along
with a myriad of vital signs, our equipment
monitors end tidal carbon dioxide, which is
the gold standard when monitoring a sedated
patient. In addition, all of our clinical
staff are certified in CPR and Basic Life
Support.

Hospital
Dentistry
Hospital dentistry is
recommended for apprehensive children, very
young children and children with special
needs that are not candidates for conscious
sedation. Your child would be placed under
general anesthesia and would be unconscious.
This would be the same as if your child were
having their tonsils removed or ear tubes
placed.
